AVA – Advocate for Vulnerable Aid
AVA is a Community Based Organisation (CBO) situated in Koidu Town, in the Kono District of Sierra Leone. AVA was founded in 1997 with the purpose of empowering the Sierra Leonean youth, and especially girls, through education. Due to the civil war many young people were (and are) without formal education and hopes for the future. AVA built a vocational school, the K-Tech School, where a group of young girls (and a few boys) are taught subjects, such as catering, carpentry, tailoring and hair dressing. The teachers are all working as volunteers.
Besides the school AVA is working with the promotion of women’s rights and capacities in the surrounding society, as women in general are being suppressed and looked down upon. This is also one of the main components of the Kono Project, which is the project between AVA and VIAid.
Apart from this, AVA works on an agricultural programme with the Danish NGO IBIS, where women are taught how to cultivate land.
Arthur is the programme coordinator of AVA and has been part of the organisation for more than seven years. He is 32 years old and recently finished his studies on Human Resource Management. Arthur is the main person in charge of all of AVA’s activities.
